Local 488 Awards 2007 Colin Kell Scholarship Award

We are pleased to announce the 2007 Colin Kell Scholarship winner, the only qualified candidate to apply, is Christopher Thomas Carlsen.   A big thank you to our extremely busy scholarship selection board for their re-opening of the process.

Remember - the deadline to apply for the 2008 award is January 1, 2008!

        The Local would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to bring our dream of a scholarship fund to fruition. Colin Kell believed in the core principles of trade unionism and was an example of how not only union membership can benefit the individual but of how one member’s actions can benefit the whole.  We look forward to next year’s applicants!

 

This is to clarify that the Colin Kell Scholarship is open only to children of members of IATSE Local 488 who are current in all union dues and assessments to facilitate their higher education. In consequence, applications received for the 2007 award have been resubmitted to the Selection Committee for reconsideration in accordance with the rules of the trust.

Since the scholarship began accepting applications in 2001, various officers including myself have inadvertently and erroneously stated that the scholarship was open to members and their dependants for a wide range of educational purposes. However, the Trust documents do not permit members or their spouses to apply, and the scholarship must be used for post-high school training by eligible children of members.

 I regret any disappointment or confusion my misunderstanding of the terms of the scholarship may have caused recent applicants. I encourage all members with children leaving high school who plan further education and training to apply for the 2008 award. The deadline is January 1 2008.
