To receive this application in hard copy, please contact  Local 488's Portland or Seattle Office.

The Local would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to bring our dream of a scholarship fund to fruition. Colin Kell believed in the core principles of trade unionism and was an example of how not only union membership can benefit the individual but of how one member’s actions can benefit the whole.  We look forward to next year’s applicants!
In honor of Brother Colin Kell who passed away March 18th, 1995, the officers of I.A.T.S.E. Local 488 have created a scholarship process to promote, perpetuate and expand the educational opportunities available to the children of current and future members of I.A.T.S.E. Local 488 who are current in all union dues and assessments.
2010 Colin Kell  / John DiScuillo Scholarship Award
We are pleased to announce the 2010 Colin Kell / John DiScuillo Scholarship winners are Tessa Marts and Christopher Carlsen
A big thank you to our extremely busy scholarship selection board for their re-opening of the process.

Congratulations Tessa & Christopher

Each year the Colin Kell/John DiScuillo trustees choose a selection committee.  This committee reviews each one of the applicants and awards up to $2000 to selected individuals.  The scholarship is open to all dependents of Local 488 members in good standing for post high school education. This year the scholarships of $1000 each, go to Tessa Marts and Christopher Carlsen.

Tessa Marts is the daughter of Robert Marts, a production sound mixer from the Seattle area. Tessa was involved in theatre at her high school and loves doing “all kinds of different behind-the– scenes work”.  She will graduate from Seattle Central Community College with an AA and transferring to a 4 year college.  Last summer she was an intern in the locations department for The Details. “I was able to discover where my true love for film work lies.  There is something I can’t describe that happens when a performance is created.  Being part of that creation is central to my biggest dream.”

Christopher Carlsen is the son of Business Agent Charlie Carlsen of the Portland area. Christopher is currently attending Oregon State University and works on campus as a teachers assistant grading physics homework papers. His goal is to earn a BS degree, and eventually a Masters of Science in theoretical physics.
